Welcome to the Nature of Crafting! My name is Cassidy. I’m an artist and craftsperson with a passion for sustainability! I want to use this blog to share projects and ideas for creating a beautiful and eco-friendly home, as well as some of my experiences as a young potter.
So who am I? About 2 years ago I finished my bachelors degree in painting and pottery. I took a huge variety of classes in art school and tried to learn as many different skills as I could, from lithography to jewelry making and fiber arts. In April of 2014 I quit my day job to work full time as a potter, and my life has been a whirlwind of new experiences since then! In less than a year I’ve started selling my work in a local pottery shop, as well as showing at a handful of venues, both large and small. In January of 2015 I began teaching private and children’s classes at the studio I work out of, and I absolutely love it. It feels unreal that my dream of being an independent artist is actually coming together! Thats not to say that my choices have been easy- I’m living on a very limited budget while I build my audience and skills, and I’m working constantly to improve and achieve my goals. And while it is hard sometimes, I can honestly say I’m happier than I’ve ever been!
As unpleasant as it may be, money (or the lack thereof) is a very necessary evil. Luckily for me, my tastes lean towards the thrifty rather than the extravagant, and I am always looking for ways to save money by either making things myself, or buying them second hand, which I truly enjoy! Coincidentally this way of living lines right up with my beliefs about sustainability and living consciously. Its so exciting to me when I can mix up a bottle of homemade, natural counter cleaner for less than 50 cents a bottle, or find ~the~ perfect piece of furniture, albeit a bit banged up, at a secondhand store for only a few dollars. I relish in bringing new life to a discarded item, and love the mystery of a piece with an unknown past!
I want to use this blog to share my ideas, in hopes that someone else might enjoy what I’m doing as much as I do, but I also want to use it to inspire creativity in myself. In the past few years I’ve found organization, both of my life and of my mind, to be one of the most important aspects of my day to day. This blog will work as an organizational tool for me, a place to keep all of my thoughts and ideas, and push me to come up with more! I hope I can inspire you as well as myself! Thanks for reading!
